Dear Sir,
Re: Current History Syllabus
------------------------

I am writing to you to express my opinion of the current History syllabus. I feel that the current History syllabus can help us to understand our ancestors and their contributions better. However, I feel that when political history is being taught, the teachers should teach about the oppisition parties too, about their plans and the better people in the parties.

The teachers should talk about the efforts that they put in so that the students will have a better range of ideas if they happen to do anything that concerns the political issues. The teachers should not just focus entirely on the People's Action Party although it is the strongest party among all the parties. The teachers probably can talk about what good points the parties have and what bad points they have as well. By doing so, students can have a comprehensive knowledge of Singapore's political history and also give them a fuller understanding of the different ways wanted to be used to help Singapore develop. If you are able to change the syllabus and implement my idea, there might be even more leaders in the country who are very familiar with the political issues due to the good education being taught when they were schooling. Then, the leaders will be able to make intelligent changes to the country based on those used previously and those not used yet to make Singapore an even better place.

Probably, some concepts can be taught in textbooks too, such as the people, circumstance and event concept. E.g. Jane was trying to reach for the salt when she accidentally knocked the plate and dropped it onto the floor. Therefore, the person is Jane, the circumstance is that the plate was there and the event was that Jane was trying to reach for the salt. This concept leads to the historic event taking place. This concept can be taught when students just started learning History so that they will know how historic events come about. Therefore, teaching these concepts to student are rather important as well as it helps students to understand and learn history better and easier.

Apart from these suggestions, I feel that the syllabus is rather good for students to learn History. Please consider my suggestions and I hope to see some changes being implemented.

Yours faithfully,
Dexter Kuah

Information on Dr William Tan

Hi everybody, I admire Dr William Tan and want to share more information about him with all of you. Here is the place where you can get more information of him! Enjoy!

Things In Class!

Hi everybody, this is going to be my second entry of the day! As you all might know, the Lunar New Year is actually tomorrow! If you go around Singapore, you can see that many places are decorated beautifully to increase the new year mood.

However, the main thing is in Hwa Chong Institution. My form teacher, Ms Ng, had told us to make lanterns last time to decorate the class as there will be a competition in which class is the best in the decoration. However, on Wednesday, 21/1/09, when Ms Ng asked who has done the lantern, she found out that nobody did and was furious and disappointed. Therefore, some people, including me, went back home that day and completed the lantern. We brought them to school and hung them outside the classroom. On the notice board at the back of our class, there are also some decorations made for the new year. The other classes are actually also decorated beautifully for the new year too. The results of the competition are coming out soon and I cannot wait to see which class will emerge victorious. It will definitely be a tight competition. May the best class win!

Blog Prompt from News Clip #2

Blog Prompt 1

Prompt: Imagine that you are Dr Tan and that you have been invited to make an article contribution to a youth magazine to encourage young people to set worthwhile goals and work towards them. This article should be 200-250 words long.

Article: Have you'll ever thought of setting worthwhile goals for yourselves and working towards them? Well, because of this thought, I always succeed in everything I do, such as doing marathons and other things to help raise funds for patients who are poor.

Although I am disabled, I have the heart to accomplish the goal I set for myself. If I can do it, you young people can do it too. I am disabled while all of you are strong and healthy, so there is no reason you'll cannot accomplish the goals you'll set for yourselves. If you all set worthwhile goals and put in your heart and soul to try to achieve it, you'll definitely excel. It's just a matter of whether you want to do it or not. If you do not want to do it, of course you will not do it well. However if you want to do it, you might have a chance of succeeding.

If you are motivated by something, it will be much better as it gives you the extra energy to accomplish your goal. Try to find something you want to do and work towards it. You will succeed one day. However, you have to have the fighting spirit and patience. As the saying goes, "Patience is the key to success". Patience is the key thing that you need to succeed in everything you do.

You must be able to withstand long hours of agony to succeed too. Of course, no pain equals to no gain. You cannot possibly expect to succeed without putting in effort. Therefore, I encourage all of you to set worthwhile goals for yourself and try to accomplish them. Who knows, what you do might actually benefit people.

Current Affairs in the America

Hey everybody. It is me once again. As most of you should know, America has a new President! It is Mr Barack Obama. He is the first African-American President in America out of the 44 presidents. The Inauguration Day was two days ago by the way.

Mr Barack Obama promises changes he will do when he becomes President of America. Everybody now depends on him to save the world from the financial crisis which has been continuing from last year. I, a Singaporean citizen, also hope that he will solve the problem so that the market will not be so bad and not so many people will get retrenched.

The financial crisis has certainly affected many people in the world in their businesses. Some are affected minorly while some are affected majorly. I hope that the people will earn as much as they earned last time so that their lives will not be affected drastically.

I believe that Mr Barack Obama was elected as people trusted him to do this well. I also believe that he can solve this problem too. Many people will be pinning their hopes on him for a change in the financial market.

Anyway, for more information about Mr Barack Obama, you can visit this website:

Here are some pictures of Mr Barack Obama:

Well, this is all I can say about the new America's president, Mr Barack Obama. Bye.

Principal's Dialogue Session 1

Hi everybody, I will be writing about the first Principal's Dialogue Session we had today in the auditorium hall during assembly. First, my school principal, Dr Hon, discussed with us on the main events in the world in the year 2008. He talked about the Sichuan Earthquake, the Beijing Olympics, the financial crisis and many more.

After he finished his speech, there were three people from iSpark classes who were the panelists for the Dialogue Session. They discussed about the Anglo-Chinese School incident, which they linked to our school morals. The school morals they talked about are joy, teamwork, integrity, global perspective, excellence, resilience and respect. Hwa Chong Institution has also created a short form for it, J-TIGERR. I felt that the panelists did a rather good job. They answered the questions asked pretty well. On the whole, I felt that today Principal's Dialogue Session was rather productive.

I personally feel that schools should be like Hwa Chong Institution and maybe some other schools and hold Principal's Dialogue Sessions so that we can discuss about the current affairs and other stuff.

Well, I got to go now. Bye!

Blog Prompts from News Clip #1

Blog Prompt 1

Prompt: You are a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals and want to raise awareness of the cruelty of whaling in Japan. Prepare a speech to be made at a public forum on the cruelty of the fishing industry to whales in Japan.

Speech: Good morning everybody. I am a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals(SPCA). I am here to talk about the cruelty of whaling in Japan.

I do agree that fishermen need to whale for their income to increase. However, I would like to ask a question. Have you fishermen ever thought of the repercussions of your actions? If you'll keep on whaling, the population of the whales will keep on decreasing significantly and eventually become extinct. As a member of the SPCA, I sincerely hope that the fishermen will minimise whaling as much as possible as I do not hope that the population of the whales will become extinct. It is a cruel thing to kill all the whales until they become extinct. Moreover, if a mother whale just gave birth to baby whales and you fishermen kill the baby whales parents, how will the babies feel? They will become "parentless" and will not have the love and care we get from our parents. At this point of time, even if you pity them, it is too late as what is done cannot be undone.

Therefore, please minimise whaling as much as possible or even better, do not whale at all. Thank you.

Blog Prompt 2

Prompt: As the chairman of the Farmers' Cooperative in Jiangsu, you want to create awareness of the hardships the farmers are experiencing due to the reforestation/conservation project by the officials. Prepare a speech you are going to make during the Governor's annual "Meet the People" session about the farmers' hardship.

Speech: Good morning Mr Lee. I am the chairman of the Farmers' Cooperative in Jiangsu. I just wanted to create awareness of the hardships the farmers are experiencing due to the reforestation project being carried out by the officials.

With the reforestation project, farmers like me are left with less space to plant our crops and with less space to plant our crops, our income will gradually decrease too. We know that you have to reforestate Jiangsu to attract tourists to come and admire our scenery. However, I hope that you will not reforestate until we are left with liitleland to plant crops. We are already very poor, and with our income decreasing, we will just become poorer.

Therefore, I hope that you will end the reforestation project soon so that we will still have some land to plant our crops. Thank you.

Blog Prompt 3

Prompt: Imagine you are one of these older workers. You have been invited by the Manpower Ministry to give a short speech to a group of local businesses to encourage them to hire older workers. Write the speech that you will deliver.

Speech: Good morning everyone. I am one of the older workers who has been hired to work in a local company. I am speaking in front of you as I would like to encourage you to hire older workers.

I feel that older workers should be given the opprtunity to work and not waste their time away at home. It is a good thing that some of you have been hiring old workers like me. Actually, there are benefits in hiring older workers. We are old and do not need much money anymore. Therefore, the salary you'll will be giving us will also naturally be lower. With a low salary to pay, the things you'll want done can also be completed by the older workers. So, it is like killing two birds with one stone. You'll also should give older workers opportunities to work as older workers will have a lot of experience and can complete the tasks, which should not be too tedious, easily.

Thus, please do not have the wrong idea that old people cannot do anything. Please do not despise us and hire us! Thank you.

Current Affairs of Singapore and the World

Hey everyone,
I thought I should not miss out on this on my blog. As you all might know, the famous former gang leader, Tan Chor Jin, aka One-eyed Dragon, was hanged on Friday morning. He shot a nightclub boss and stole the latter's valuables before fleeing to Malaysia, where he was captured by Malaysian police in a Kuala Lumpur hotel. For more information, you may visit this website:
http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_323992.html

However, after he passed away, he donated his organs to charity. This might be one of the very good deeds he might have done in his entire life and I am going to have to compliment him for this.

As you all might know, there has been an economic downturn recently. Everybody in the world is trying to save money now. However, some people say, if we do not chip in some money to shop, things in the economy will never turn for the better and shopping centres might even have to close down. Why, you might ask. It is because the economy depends on the people spending their money to expand. Thus, if people never spend, the economy will shut down. However, bear in mind that we have to save for rainy days too.

Due to the recession, there have been banks which close down and many people are now jobless too as companies are trying to retrench people to cut costs. Therefore, my advice to all of you is that we must spend within limits.

Well, this is what I can say about the current affairs! Bye!

Things learnt in Classes in School

Hey everybody,
I am back with my second entry. It is 7pm now on a great Sunday. I am here to talk about my Mathematics class. My teacher, Mr Shaun Yong, had given my class many worksheets to do, some of which I didn't know how to do. Therefore, during the weekend, I used some of my time to read the textbook. After reading my textbook, I understood what the questions in the worksheets were asking for and I was able to do them in a twinkling of an eye.

The questions in the worksheets were normally about factors. There were also some questions requesting us to do some research on the internet. I was able to complete them after doing much research using google and wikipedia. By the way, I have just completed the homework Mr Yong assigned us to do on the Maths textbook.

For Science, there was a report to do on unethical acts by scientists. I completed it yesterday after about an hour of research and another hour on the report.

For Geography and History, I have prepared ring files for them, both green. I have an Ace project to do for Geography too, but I have not completed it yet. I have no homework for Chinese, but I have to write my thoughts on a book called "Di Zi Gui"(hanyu pinyin) for my PCME lesson.

Well, this is about it. Bye!

1st Entry on My OWN PERSONAL BLOG!!! :)

Hi everybody,
So, you came to my blog. I shall do a self introduction of myself. I am Dexter Kuah from Class 1O1 of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI). I suppose all of you should know my name by now from the big text at the top of this page. I love playing all type of sports, especially soccer and waterpolo. I play two musical instruments, piano and guitar. I am currently doing grade 4 for piano. However, for my guitar, I only went for lessons for a month just to know how to pluck the strings and other things. I have not been working on it for a very long time as I didn't bother to find the guitar tabs.

Hmmm... Well, this is my very FIRST ENTRY. This is the first blog I am going to update almost every single day. For other blogs, I usually just create and the next day, I have forgotten the blog's URL!(Stop laughing if you are laughing.) I don't treat blogs seriously last time. But this time, it's different. I will do my best to make this blog filled with words and probably, some pictures.

Today, 9/1/09, is the sixth day of school since it reopened. But there is actually more to it. It is my sixth day as a Secondary One student!! :) I have been enjoying it in HCI these past few days. Of course, I also have some responsibilities to take as I am the class chairman. However, I still can cope with my homework, UP TO NOW.

Well, it is the last day of CCA orientation today. I feel like I am spoilt for choice as there are many CCAs I can choose. The coaches and seniors from various sports have asked me to write down my name and contact number for them to reach me. I have written down my name for a uniformed group, NPCC, too. I have been discussing with my parents what CCA to join but have not really reached a final decision yet. Oh right! I wish all of those who might go for selection tests or those who have gone but still do not know the results good luck!

Oh no. Look at the time. It's 11.30pm. I have to go now as it is so late. So, I will stop here! Remember, look out for my next entry!! :D
